When we think of electric vehicles, sustainability, and luxury, the brand that often springs to mind is Tesla. However, with the unveiling of the all-new Volvo EX30, an all-electric SUV with hot-hatch proportions and a powerful AWD variant, it’s clear that the electric vehicle market is heating up, and Volvo is ready to claim its slice of the pie.
The Volvo EX30, which comes with a surprisingly affordable price tag of $36,145, is an SUV that aims to bridge the gap between luxury and affordability in the electric vehicle market. It’s more than 8 inches shorter in length than the electric XC40 Recharge, which is available in India with an on road price close to 60 Lakhs, and features high-quality fittings and nifty interior details, many of which are made from recycled materials. The EX30 uses a single center-mounted screen for both instrumentation and infotainment, a testament to the Swedish brand’s penchant for minimalism.

Mechanically, the EX30 is far from being a stripped-down model. It’s based on a new platform called SEA (Scalable Electric Architecture), developed with parent company Geely. The rear-drive EX30 sports a single motor producing 268 hp and can make the 0-60-mph run in 5.1 seconds. But for those with a thirst for more power, Volvo offers a 422-hp two-motor all-wheel-drive version which Volvo claims will be the quickest vehicle it’s ever produced, boasting a 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds. Both models draw power from the same 69-kWh lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt (Li-NMC) battery, and the EX30 supports fast charging at up to 153 kW, capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 26.5 minutes.
The EX30 is not only about speed and power, though. It’s also about practicality and versatility. Despite its compact proportions, cargo space in the EX30 is decent, and there’s a false floor that provides a level loading surface when the seats are down. Volvo has also announced a Cross Country version of the EX30, featuring increased ground clearance, skid plates, and black 19-inch wheels.
The interior is another area where the EX30 shines. Volvo’s devotion to reduced parts count has resulted in some innovative features like a single switch controlling all powered seat functions and a center console with a full-length double-deck storage tray with two integrated wireless charging pads. The front speakers are integrated into a sound bar at the base of the windshield, and the skeletal dashboard vents are a work of art.
About 25 percent of the aluminum, 17 percent of the steel, and 17% of the plastics used to make the EX30 are recycled, highlighting Volvo’s commitment to sustainability. The EX30 also features an upgraded version of City Safety that can brake for vehicles approaching from the side and a new version of Volvo’s self-parking system, which can handle various parking spaces by controlling the accelerator, brakes, and steering.

Volvo will begin taking reservations as soon as the car launches, with the Cross Country version becoming available for order next year. While some marketswill get their EX30s towards the end of this year, the first U.S. deliveries won’t happen until the second quarter of 2024.
With its ambitious pricing, powerful performance, sustainable ethos, and thoughtful design, the Volvo EX30 is a compelling new entry in the EV market. Whether you’re an electric vehicle enthusiast, a sustainability advocate, or someone seeking a balance of luxury and affordability, the Volvo EX30 is worth checking out. It’s a testament to how far electric vehicles have come, and a hint at where they’re going.
