In a bid to transform the digital landscape of India, Reliance Jio is set to launch a groundbreaking new service called Jio AirFiber. Unveiled at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) in October 2022, Jio AirFiber promises to deliver fiber-like speed over the air using 5G technology, a first for India’s telecommunications industry.

Jio AirFiber is a wireless internet service designed for use at home and in offices. As simple to use as plugging in and turning on the device, users can enjoy high-speed internet of up to 1.5Gbps. The service is set to cover an area of up to 1000 square feet on the same floor of a house or an office, providing extensive Wi-Fi coverage using True 5G.Beyond providing high-speed internet, Jio AirFiber offers a plethora of features such as parental control, Wi-Fi 6 support, seamless integration with Jio set-top box for TV viewing, and easy installation and management via an app. Users will also be able to block certain websites or devices on the network, providing additional control over their internet usage.
Jio AirFiber, being based on true-5G technology, has the potential to disrupt the market, challenging established broadband players such as Airtel, BSNL, and ACT. Its innovative standalone technology, which doesn’t rely on existing 4G infrastructure, gives it an edge over its competitors in terms of speed and reliability.

Reports suggest that Jio AirFiber services are likely to be launched in June or July 2023. The devices are expected to come in two variants – a non-portable Wi-Fi router and a portable one, with the latter offering Wi-Fi 6 support. The non-portable model is expected to retail at Rs 5,500, and the portable one at Rs 6,000. Both models of the AirFiber come with Wi-Fi routers, with one acting as the antenna and the other as the extender. The installation process involves setting up the hardware, inserting the Jio 5G SIM in the AirFiber, and then connecting to the network via the Jio Home app.
With the launch of Jio AirFiber, Reliance Jio aims to accelerate its connected homes strategy and expand Jio Fiber along with AirFiber services to 100 million houses in the next two to three years. Given the convenience and affordability it offers, Jio AirFiber could indeed be a game-changer for the broadband market in India, marking a new era of high-speed, wireless internet connectivity.
